Although colors are primarily cream, this is completely natural soapstone with no dyeing, so each piece shows the unique color and grain that it natural to the light soapstone.

About the Artisans:
Soapstone is mined in Kisii county in southwestern Kenya. We work with three different artisan groups in and around Nairobi who carve, polish and paint the stone to create beautiful pieces.
This pair of large hamper baskets are woven in Ghana using natural elephant grass, finished with soft leather wrapped around the handles. The baskets are tightly woven and can stand up to years of usage while still remaining beautiful. Reshape when needed.

Kamba artisans in Kenya hand carve this beautifully useful wooden cooking spoon from wild olive wood. The creamy white cow bone handle is dressed up with a dyed zigzag pattern.
The spoons are carved from a single piece of sustainably sourced olive wood. Care: hand wash in warm water, dry, and occasionally condition with olive oil. Measures 12"L x 3.5"W x 1"H.

These large, soft pillows from Le Ndomo in Mali feature handmade cotton mudcloth and include a pillow insert. Intricate line designs in an expanding square pattern are hand-dyed.
The pillows are finished on the backside in a foldover enclosure. The cover measures 18"x 18" and insert measures 20" x 20". Natural cotton that is carded, spun, woven and dyed by hand may include variations in color and texture. This is an expected feature of handmade cloth.
Care: (Remove pillow insert) Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, when needed, line dry, iron on cotton setting.

Le Ndomo is a social enterprise created to address the unemployment problem of young people who have not had the chance to study or to attend school. Ndomo aims to give these young people training with local knowledge: In addition to technical training, it also aims to assist young people in life by facilitating their socialization and by giving them values that will increase the quality of their lives; responsibility, personal commitment, work and solidarity, in strict compliance with the values of traditional African society.

Country of Origin: CameroonThis large mudcloth blanket is handmade in Mali using locally grown cotton. The cotton is woven into strips of thick canvas, stitched together, and then roll painted with traditional Malian designs.
Measures approximately 46"W x 72"L. Fair trade; due to the handmade nature of this blanket, patterns will vary. Hemmed borders at top and bottom; as typical with authentic mudcloth, the backside is unfinished. For best care, hand wash in cool water and air dry.

Artisans work from home, in their own workshops or on-site at Mali Chic, and child labor is never used. These meaningful vases are hand-carved from a single piece of sandalwood and feature a smooth, cut-out heart as the focal point. Designs incorporate both the rough inner bark of the sandalwood tree and smooth, polished sandalwood to give each vase character and to utilize more of the tree's wood.
