Kamba artisans in Kenya hand carve this small coffee spoon from wild olive wood, a slow-growing tree with beautifully grained wood. The handle is formed from bleached cow bone, hand carved to resemble the antlers of savanna antelopes like the topi, gazelle and waterbuck.

Vikapu Bomba embodies the vision of Catherine Shembilu to create sustainable income for talented, rural Tanzanian women. For many women living in the lush southern highlands, life centers around subsistence farming, cooking, cleaning, and caring for children. Women can weave baskets between their other duties, working daily to earn money to pay school fees, buy food, procure farming supplies and contribute to savings. When a woman has money of her own to use or share, she has greater influence over her life and future.

Milulu grass reeds can be harvested carefully from the marsh without removing the entire plant. The reeds are dried in the sun, dyed with natural dyes, and split for weaving. The closeness to the earth of both maker and product gives these beautifully crafted baskets natural appeal.

Handwoven in the West African nation of Senegal, these outstanding baskets bring incredible artisan craftsmanship and great storage into our living spaces.

About the Artisans:

We work with an amazing co-op in Kenya, the Gikomba Wood Carving Cooperative, a group of woodcarvers of all ages who work in an open-air workshop in Nairobi. This environmentally-responsible group takes care to legally procure all types of African wood used in their products, and they are skilled at using all parts of the tree in their artwork.

These darling rabbit sculptures are hand-carved from Kenyan soapstone and dyed a vibrant yellow color.

Sold individually. Small bunnies measure 2.5"L x 1.75"W x 3"T. Large bunnies measure 2.5"L x 1.75"W x 4"T. Due to the handmade nature of these items, size and color may vary slightly.

About the Artisans:

Soapstone is mined in Kisii county in southwestern Kenya. We work with three different artisan groups in and around Nairobi who carve, polish and paint the stone to create beautiful pieces.

This sweet butterfly garden stake is crafted from glass beads and recycled wire. Choose from white with silver accents or yellow with blue accents. Gently press the stake down into a flower bed, planter, or house plant to add a whimsical touch!

Gourds, also called calabash, are a sustainable, organic vessel made from the dried shells of squash or pumpkins. In Kenya, the dried gourds were traditionally used as a bowl for food or for storing water. Today, Kenyan artisans use gourds to craft beautiful works of art.

A modern take on classic Senufo washing stools, this stylish piece of African accent furniture can easily serve as a side table or a stool. Hand carved from cedrela wood, each piece features a painted contoured top and natural tapered legs.
