About the Artisans:

For the pastoral communities of northern Kenya, life pivots on the coming of rain and the survival of livestock. When the skies open, the landscape becomes lush and fragrant. Cattle and goats drink and forage near home and families stay together. In times of drought, warriors must travel far to find water for their herds, leaving women and children at home alone to endure dry seasons of unknown length as the streams, earth and trees dry around them.

Where they were once only allowed to own milk, Samburu women now own camels, plus they earn income by making baskets, processing meat and hides, keeping bees and refining honey. Through this shift in property control and a general increase in literacy in the region, Samburu women have become valued contributing community members.

Measures 14-16"D x 4"T.

About the Artisans:

Famous for their basket weaving skills as well as their geometric designs, the Batonga women in the Pemba and Monze districts of Zambia's Southern Plateau create these baskets by first weaving palm leaves into a characteristic square to begin and then radiating outward to create dramatic patterns.

Empowering women in East Africa through entrepreneurship, The Leakey Collection is also providing support to help their female Maasai neighbors build businesses benefiting their families, beginning with a high-yield, low-impact dairy cattle program.

This Women-Owned Multi-Strand Necklace combines 16 Zulugrass strands in vivid shades of red and fuschia. Each necklace features beautiful fallen acacia wood beads and is strung on a black satin cord that can be adjusted to lengthen or shorten the necklace's drape. The necklace can be adjusted to a total length of 33" and has a matching Multi-Strand Bracelet. Zulugrass strands are made from sustainable, natural grass beads, dyed with colorfast, low-impact dyes and interspersed with hand-blown Czech glass. Due to the handmade nature of this item, slight variation is expected.

Handcrafted by the artisans of Tribal Textiles in Zambia's lush Luangwa Valley, this table runner features 2 hand-painted figures: a warrior and a dancing woman. Handcrafted with 100% African-sourced cotton, the table runner is finished with 4 seamed edges. Reverse side is unpainted and unfinished.

Details and color placement will vary from image shown due to the hand-painted nature of this item. Each item has the same overall motif and color palette, but the final product is the work of the artisan's choicesâ for instance, each figure's clothing and accessories are unique.

Measures 68"L x 18"W. Wash by hand or machine in warm water with mild detergent; hang to dry, iron on cotton setting.

About the Artisans:

Tribal Textiles provides sustainable employment, fair pay, training, and a pleasant working environment for more than 100 Zambian men and women.

All the work is done by hand on 100% African-sourced cottonâ including the time-intensive drawing, sewing and painting with natural pigment colorsâ yielding exquisite, high quality textiles. Individual designs are hand-painted, drawing inspiration from the stunning wildlife and surroundings at the edge of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. After baking in an industrial oven, the stunning textiles are color-fast and fully washable. The fabric is washed and dried in the Zambian sunshine, ready to be sewn into stunning pillow covers, table runners, bags, and more.
