These colorful sculptures are made from discarded flip flops that have been hand-formed, carved, and cemented together by artisans at Kenya's Ocean Sole Company.
Every year, ocean tides bring thousands of flip flops from all over the world to the shores of the East African coast, creating an environmental disaster for marine and beach life. Residents and artisans make the most out of this situation by transforming the foam into safari sculptures.
Each sculpture is one-of-a-kind and designs will vary. Measures 5"L x 2.5"W x 3.5"T. Size may vary slightly.
The Flip Flop Recycling Company was started in 1997 on the north coast of Kenya by conservationist Julie Church. This unparalleled social enterprise collects, cleans, and converts discarded flip flops and foam shoes into stunning one-of-a-kind art. Operated from a tranquil compound near Nairobi's Karen neighborhood, the FFRC creates employment and art for local women, young men, and children while also protecting marine life.
