The basket was selected for its beauty and quality by the owner of Swahili Modern on a recent visit to Dakar. Tightly woven using a coil stitch, the basket is made from natural grasses and thin strips of plastic.

Since 2008, Swahili has worked with a group of talented Wolof weavers in remote Senegal to provide hampers and baskets woven from salvaged plastic strips and cattail stalks to stores around the world, including West Elm, Land of Nod, The Company Store, Garnet Hill and Anthropologie. Working together with the Peace Corps, Swahili and over 120 Wolof women prove that cooperative, home-based craft export is an proven way for rural women to earn the fair trade incomes that build healthy communities.
