Shopping for someone else but not sure what to give them? Give them a Swahili Modern Gift Card!
Measuring 13.5"D x 5"H, this handwoven basket holds an impressive amount of fruit or bread. An aqua rim adds just a touch of color contrast.
Wolof women in rural Senegal craft these beautiful baskets from grass stalks and long strips of plastic. Traditionally, such baskets were used to winnow grain and store food in the home, but modern synthetic materials update the baskets with eye-popping color.
Since 2008, Swahili has worked with a group of talented Wolof weavers in remote Senegal to provide hampers and baskets woven from salvaged plastic strips and cattail stalks to stores around the world, including West Elm, Land of Nod, The Company Store, Garnet Hill and Anthropologie. Working together with the Peace Corps, Swahili and over 120 Wolof women prove that cooperative, home-based craft export is an proven way for rural women to earn the fair trade incomes that build healthy communities.
