Measuring 70" long, these handmade table runners are created by weaving dried twigs through through hand-dyed mudcloth fabric.
Two lengths of twigs are used to create visual contrast. The fabric is a thick canvas that has been dyed using a mudcloth technique in Mali. Measures 16"W x 70"L; size may vary slightly.

This gorgeous indigo blanket is handmade using natural indigo dye in Burkina Faso. The blanket is created from several long panels of homespun fabric that are resist-dyed and then hand-stitched together, with hand-twisted fringe at each end—truly handcrafted from start to finish. Measures approximately 45"W x 62"L.

The blankets are dyed with indigo powder extracted from the leaves of the indigofera tinctoria plant. Today, the use of synthetic indigo dye is predominant, but pockets of artisans still process the plant to create this prized traditional cloth.

About the Artisans:
Artisans in Burkina Faso specialize in the making of hand-dyed indigo textiles. Production of these textiles is a multiple stage process which involves the participation of children, men and women of the same clan. The process includes gathering and preparing the local cotton, weaving the basic cloth, processing the indigofera tinctoria plant, and dyeing the fabric using a traditional resist-dye method.

Congo raffia, a traditional textile of the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is woven from the natural fiber of the raffia palm. The fabric has a rustic texture that is highlighted by the hand-appliqued, traditional designs. The seamstresses at Marvelous Batik in Tanzania create beautiful decorative pillows from this uniquely African textile. Each pillow is crafted to feature the bold, hand-appliqued geometric designs of the Congo raffia.

Marvelous Batik is a workshop in Tanzania that betters the lives of at-risk young women by teaching them new skills, helping them to be self-sustaining, and providing basic necessities.
