Congo raffia, a traditional textile of the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is woven from the natural fiber of the raffia palm. The fabric has a rustic texture that is highlighted by the hand-appliquéd, traditional designs. The seamstresses at Marvelous Batik in Tanzania create beautiful decorative pillows from this uniquely African textile. Each pillow is crafted to feature the bold, hand-appliquéd geometric designs of the Congo raffia.
The pillows include a high-quality pillow insert, side zipper, and backing of dark cotton. While pillows will be similar to the photograph shown, no two pillows are the the same.
Measures 18" x 18". Only 3 available.
Marvelous Batik is a workshop in Tanzania that betters the lives of at-risk young women by teaching them new skills, helping them to be self-sustaining, and providing basic necessities. Run by a compassionate woman named Flotea Masawe, the cooperative is nationally recognized for their production of batik and embroidered cotton textiles. Pillows, table runners, duvet covers, bags, and curtain panels are just a few of the items currently exported by this talented group of women.
