Wood Carving

Short Carved Namji Fertility Dolls with Beads

Swahili Modern

  • Modern interpretations of the Namji fertility dolls that were traditionally carried by young girls to encourage mothering instincts and by women hoping to conceive, these sculptures are hand carved from jacaranda wood then decorated with beads.

    These small sculptures, with geometric features, measure 2.5"L x 1.75"W x 8.5"T.

  • Originating from the traditional fertility designs of the Dowayo/ Namji ethnic group in north-west Cameroon, these are crafted by artisans from Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo who are currently living as refugees in Nairobi, Kenya and have a loyal following in shops throughout East Africa.
