Natural & Rust Iringa Basket Totes with Leather Handle

Swahili Modern

TZB7B

  • Woven from a reed-like swamp grass called milulu grass, Iringa baskets are an indispensable utility item from Tanzania, and this stylish tote is one that you can count on using for years to come. To extend the functionality of these durable baskets, artisans in Tanzania add soft leather handles and upper trim.

Tanzanian craftswomen, who have spent decades working with milulu, weave intricate, rust-colored stripes into each basket's design so the designs in this tote may vary from photo.

Even though they are all-natural, the baskets are very durable and can be rinsed with water as needed. Size: [Large] 18"L x 14"W x 14"T (to top of tote), 24"T (to top of handles); [Small] Size: 16"L x 10"W x 11"T (to top of tote), 20"T (to top of handles).

  • Home of the Hehe people, the city of Iringa is situated 300 miles from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and stretches along a hilltop overlooking the Ruaha River to the south. Iringa is famous for its woven baskets made from local reeds. The baskets are an important source of income for the 100,000 population town and are used across Tanzania and exported worldwide.
