JOINING FORCES WITH THE LEAKEY COLLECTION
The Leakey Collection has focused on zulugrass bracelets and jewelry in Kenya since 2002. Their iconic grass beads are dyed with low-impact dyes and strung on durable elastic. The sale of their products contributes to wonderful work in East Africa, including creating employment for thousands of women, promoting health and hygiene, bringing clean water into homes, and mentoring young girls through school.
Philip and Katy Leakey, founders of The Leakey Collection who live among the Maasai in East Africa, wanted to provide their neighbors with work opportunities. They came up with an imaginative idea to utilize the excellent beading abilities of the Maasai women by using a readily available, sustainable resource- GRASS- as the primary element.




THE STORY OF THE LEAKEY COLLECTION
In 2001, a terrible drought persisted for several years and brought devastation to the pasture lands. The livelihood of the Maasai disappeared as their cattle died. The men had to drive the few remaining cattle hundreds of miles away in search for better grazing...

This whimsical woodpecker sculpture, complete with a tab for affixing to the wall or a fence, is handcrafted in Zimbabwe using colorful recycled oil drums. Each sculpture is finished with varnish to protect against the elements. However, some weathering should be expected if the sculpture is exposed to the elements over a long period of time. Artisans at the Tonderai Metal Works in Zimbabwe use recycled materials and discarded oil drums to create stunning works of art and feature one-of-a-kind detailing.

This duet pairs one 7" Kenyan-made porcelain bracelet on elastic with one colorful Zulugrass strand. Wear them together as a stacked bracelet or wear each piece individually. Due to the handmade nature of this item, slight variation is expected.
Zulugrass 26" single strands are made from sustainable, natural grass beads. Maasai artisans hand-dye the grass with colorfast, low-impact dyes. Strung on elastic interspersed with Czech glass beads, it can be worn as a bracelet, necklace, anklet, hair tie and more. Zulugrass is as creative as the individual who wears it!
This gorgeous purse is handwoven from sisal and features a beautiful pattern, a zippered leather top and strap. Woven from long strips of fiber extracted from the tough sisal plant, each bag is generously sized and the strap is adjustable. The upper and handle are crafted from rustic, distressed leather in terracotta brown.
Measures approximately 12"T x 12"W x 8"D. Strap is 42" long.

About the Artisans:
In the rural Kenyan countryside around the city of Kitui, women specialize in weaving the tough fibers of the agave sisalana plant. Sisal's spiky leaf clusters erupt from a dry landscape and often requires long journeys to gather. Once woven, these womens' totes are sold to local and international markets. Singing, dancing, and chatting make weaving for export an enjoyable social event!

Transforming recycled glass beads into stylish bracelets is the work of artisans from Ghana. Using a matte powdered glass plank bead set off with lustrous black glass beads, they are strung on strong elastic allowing it to fit most wrists.
About the Artisans:
Our recycled glass products are crafted by rural Krobo artisans in Ghana from discarded glass bottles. Krobo powder glass beads are made in vertical molds fashioned out of a special, locally dug clay.

Locally-grown organic Ethiopian cotton is woven by the artisans of Sammy Ethiopia to create a simple scarf with colorful borders and light fringe. Luxe scarves are incredibly versatile and lightweight enough to be worn year-round.

These luxe throws are woven by artisans using cotton grown and spun in Ethiopia. The weaving process creates sumptuously soft, multi-tonal cotton with handspun texture. Each throw is finished with a hand-sewn center seam and hand-knotted fringe on each end. The Harvest Moon colorway features warm, earthy tones and neutrals.
Natural materials such as leaves, flowers, and coffee, along with textile dyes are used to produce each color. The environmentally friendly dyes are both AZO free and REACH certified.
Throw is made with 100% Ethiopian cotton and measures approximately 72"L x 47"W. Due to the handcrafted nature of this item, some variation may occur.

Sabahar is an Ethiopian company that produces uniquely designed, hand made cotton and silk textiles that are entirely handcrafted from natural fibers grown and processed in Ethiopia.
Kathy Marshall, a Canadian by birth who has lived in Ethiopia over 20 years, founded Sabahar in 2004. Her passion for preserving and celebrating the rich weaving tradition of Ethiopia, combined with her desire to create respectful and ethical work opportunities for marginalized people have laid the foundation for the company.

Teak, with its lovely dark tone and intricate grain, only needs a light coating of oil to highlight the natural beauty of these handmade and unique serving pieces.
