Flattering in any home, this large basket is handwoven in Ghana's Bolgatanga region using tough, un-dyed elephant grass. This basket's grass handle is beautiful and all-natural, but without leather binding, the handle cannot withstand carrying heavy weight. We recommend this basket be used for stationary decorative purposes.
Bolga baskets can be wet with water to wash or reshape, and are designed to last for decades because of their tight weave and material. Measures 16"T x 24"D.
While thick clusters of veta vera, also known as elephant grass, grow primarily in southern Ghana, weavers in the far northern Bolgatanga region excel at transforming the tough plant fiber into iconic baskets that are collected around the world. Most basket weavers live in small villages surrounding Bolgatanga, and enjoy weaving as a means to earn income to supplement farming and animal husbandry.
