These lovely musical instruments are handcrafted by artisans in Senegal from a calabash gourd, leather and wood. A traditional West African instrument, the kora is played facing the musician, and plucked similarly to a harp. Hand painted designs adorn the face of the kora which has either 6 or 10 vinyl strings and tuners.
The back of each gourd is hand-painted, and the designs give the instruments a decorative aesthetic when hung on the wall. Six String measures 7"L x 6"W x 21"T and Ten String measures 8.5"L x 7"W x 24"T. Since these are handcrafted items, they will vary slightly.
An artisan co-op of young men in Senegal create hand-crafted musical instruments from gourds and recycled materials such as coffee tins. Frequently the artisans are also musicians themselves, and they take great care in producing instruments of exceptional quality and beauty.
