A TRADITION OF BASKET WEAVING IN GHANA
Starting from a small woven circle, Ghanaian basket weavers work their way out from a central point to reveal beautiful, distinctive Bolga baskets. Sometimes called “market baskets,” Bolga baskets are woven from veta vera, or elephant grass. While the grass is grown primarily in southern Ghana, weavers in the northern region of Bolgatanga excel at transforming the tough grass fiber into the iconic baskets. The people from the region rely on the sale of handcrafted items to supplement their income, and their craftsmanship is demonstrated by the high quality of these artfully woven baskets.
The weaving of Bolga baskets in Ghana has been a traditional skill for many generations, and is often a communal process. The Bolga baskets sold by Swahili Modern are fair trade and a reliable source of income for weavers and their families. Just as the baskets begin as a small circle and expand, so does the impact of purchasing fair trade items that directly benefit, support and empower the artisans who create them.

This large blanket is handmade by artisans in Bamako, Mali who grow and weave locally grown cotton. The artisans use an updated mudcloth technique to create abstract, geometric patterns. Each blanket is hand-dyed and one-of-a-kind.
Measures approximately 46"W x 68-72"L. Patterns and colors will vary due to the handmade nature of this item. Hemmed borders at top and bottom; as typical with authentic mudcloth, the backside is unfinished. For best care, hand wash in cool water and air dry.
About the Artisans:
Mali Chic is a collaboration of 195 artisans that sells its products through a boutique in Bamako and through international exports. Artisans work from home, in their own workshops or on-site at Mali Chic, and child labor is never used. Mali Chic provides artisans with 50% advances on all orders and pay a fair price for their products.

The South African Zizamele Ceramics, founded in 2008 by Toni Burton who taught ceramics skills at a local college, creates highly sought after and collectable ceramic pieces that can be found all around the world and is increasingly exporting to international stores and galleries. Members of Zizamele have their own ceramic specialty developed after Toni taught an 18-month long job creation course in craft production.

In the Pemba and Monze districts of Zambia's Southern Plateau, skilled Batonga women craft iconic baskets from locally harvested palm leaves and wild twigs. To update their classic designs with beautiful color, weavers tint the palm leaves with textile dye before weaving. These artfully handcrafted baskets make a great addition to any home decor.

Famous for their basket weaving skills as well as their geometric designs, the Batonga women in the Pemba and Monze districts of Zambia's Southern Plateau create these baskets by first weaving palm leaves into a characteristic square to begin and then radiating outward to create dramatic patterns.

Showcasing natural, gray soapstone, this sweet mama and baby elephant sculpture set is hand-carved and polished by Kenyan artisans. Each sculpture displays the natural grain and varied coloration of gray soapstone. Colors are predominantly gray, but this is completely natural soapstone with no dyeing. Each piece could display variation in shade, grain, veining, and even some brown and pink tones, making each piece beautifully one of a kind. Additional color swatches are shown as possible examples.

Handwoven from durable stalks of elephant grass, it can easily be toted wherever a busy mom needs to go. These Moses baskets are handcrafted by Ghanaian basket weavers and have leather-wrapped carry handles. It also makes a great storage basket once the baby has outgrown it.

CAUTION: This product is suitable only for babies who cannot sit up unaided, roll over, or push up on their hands and knees and designed for stationary naptime use.
